Lightning - Hoodie Avro Japan and the NetherlandsEnglish Electric Lightning THE supersonic fighter of the Cold War, this jet was capable of Mach 2 with an incredible rate of climb still classified to this day. The Lightning entered service in 1959 and retired from the RAF in 1988 having served as an interceptor, notably engaging Russian reconnaissance aircraft that were 'testing' the UK's air defences.
