Dilke was a radical Liberal politician who served as MP for Chelsea between 1866 and 1886. He was a cabinet minister from 1882 1885, helping to pass a range of progressive legislation including laws giving the municipal franchise to women, limiting working hours and legalising unions, but his ministerial career ended due to a scandalous divorce
