A circular medal constructed of silver, the obverse bears the left facing bust of Ernst Ludwig, circumscribed by the inscription ERNST LUDWIG GROSSHERZOG VON HESSEN, the reverse centre presents the inscription FR KRIEGSVERDIENSTE (FOR WAR MERIT) encompassed by a laurel and oak wreath tied with a ribbon at the bottom, with loop for suspension on a blue ribbon with red stripes,
