The Coming Race Finish:Stretched Meeting-house of St Mary Magdalen'The Coming Race', 1872. This cartoon shows one of the new female doctors asking for assistance from a manly and upright male surgeon. Punch disapproved generally of women moving into traditional male professions. However, this cartoon shows in the background just the type of Out Patient board that might be seen today. It also illustrates the widespread use of chloroform in surgery.
