I found another of a very similar animal form in a very similar manner described as a fox (image included in photos)--that one 19th century and described as carved by a shaman for a hunter to carry as as a sort of amulet or charm

In most are thin pieces of cut paper templates for each piece of the pattern. I think they're great looking things, with the color printed in all cases but one, where it was watercolored by hand. Each envelope measures 6 1 2" x 3
