Insurance company drone 'C. C. Baxter' (Jack Lemmon), in an attempt to progress in the company, allows executives to use his apartment for trysts. Word spreads and the big boss (Fred MacMurray) becomes involved. Things are further complicated when C. C. falls hard for a woman (Shirley MacLaine) himself.
