It represents a geometric abstraction of a hemp leaf. In ancient Japan, hemp was used during shamanic rituals linked to shintoism and was then considered a sacred plant. Asanoha kamon are however rather new, as they appeared and spread mainly from the 19th century. It is also a rare emblem, with only a dozen variations. Asanoha
